Department of Pacific Asia

General description:

The Department is chaired by Professor Lyubov Klim (PhD, History).

It was established as a structural element of the School of Asia-Pacific Studies (formerly School of Regional and International Studies) on Sept. 1, 2011 following the merger of previously established Board of Sinitic Civilization History and Department of South and Southeast Asia of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the FENU/FEFU.

The actual history of East Asian (a.k.a. Oriental) studies is traced back to 1967, while the recent structural changes represent new stage of education in the field of East Asian and regional studies.

Mission, goals, and tasks:

The importance of structural changes reflects the role undertaken by the FEFU in the Asia Pacific region. The mission, as designated for the department is to facilitate and make mutually beneficial the interaction of Pacific Asia nations and institutions for ultimate benefit of sustainable development in the third millennium.

This mission is projected upon the goals and tasks of the department, such as:

  • The department will educate and train the professionals, whose expertize would encompass both regional (Pacific Asian) and specifically national (China, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Indonesia, etc.) issues.
  • The department will provide cross-departmental assistance on various educational and academic issues.
  • The department will participate in various educational programs of other FEFU’s Schools, particularly when and where it will be essential to understand specific problems of other nations, peoples and cultures of Pacific Asia.
  • The department will organize and host research, expert, practical activities according to its generally defined scientific field of the Pacific Asian peoples and nations: traditions, modernization and global perspective.  
  • The department will facilitate the development of the community of the Asia-Pacific experts, that would be capable of finding solution for contemporary issues basing on integration of academic, project-and-program, organizational and educational components.
