The Center for Asia-Pacific Studies of the FEFU Institute of Oriental Studies – School of Regional and International Studies (FEFU IOS-SRIS CAPS) jointly with the Institute for Asian Studies and Regional Collaboration of the Akita International University (AIU IASRC) invites the young scholars of FEFU to apply for a paid research internship in Akita, Japan. The period of the internship is three-four weeks until the end of March, preferably the end of February, 2016.

We invite young researches who have their interest in the economic development of Akita and related topics. Since the local government of Akita is now interested in developing a sealine with the ports of Vladivostok and/or Posyet, it would be welcome to have a Russian researcher working, for example, on the problems of Japanese ports on the Sea of Japan.

Applicants should be enrolled in FEFU either as PhD student or as faculty (position of an assistant and above). MA students could be also considered on an exceptional basis. High-level proficiency in English language is required, knowledge of Japanese language may be considered as an asset.

The selection process is comprehensive and has 3 stages:

  1. Application submission by November, 15. All applicants should submit an application form together with one published research paper in English language (60000 characters maximum).
  2. Selected candidates will be invited for a personal interview in English language on November, 25-30
  3. Three selected candidates by the FEFU IOS-SRIS CAPS will be sent to the AIU IASRC for the decision. The final result will be announced by December, 10, 2015.

In course of the application process, FEFU IOS-SRIS CAPS Director Prof. Ryzhova will give the master-class on the research projects preparation on November, 2. The Master-class is open to the applied candidates, as well as applicants who are considering such opportunity.

The conditions of the internship are as follows: travel expenses (air ticket from Vladivostok to Akita and back) and accommodation (guest room in the AIU campus) covered, per diem and research budget provided.

By the end of the internship the researcher will provide the final report online. The essence of the final report should be turned into an academic article, which should to be included in the Journal of the AIU Institute for Asian Studies and Regional Collaboration.
